Ask ChatGPT

My Conversations with ChatGPT
Machine Translation (MT) and translations generated by AI have brought about a paradigm shift in the translation industry. The output of MT will continue to improve, especially when associated with clients’ translation memories and human editing. Language Service Providers are adapting and are including MT in their processes, when MT is applicable. While linguists will continue to be essential in the process, their role will shift from that of translators to validators of content generated by MT. At Excel Translations, we wanted to know what AI thinks about all of this and decided to have an open conversation on the matter with ChatGPT. I will regularly publish a question and ChatGPT’s response, uncensored.

QUESTION 24:

What is the average amount of a time it takes for machine translation?

Chat GPT’s Response:

The average amount of time it takes for machine translation can vary depending on several factors, including the length and complexity of the text, the quality of the translation system, and the computational resources available. Generally, machine translation systems can translate text in real-time or near real-time for short and simple sentences. However, for longer and more complex texts, the translation process may take longer.

State-of-the-art machine translation systems, such as neural machine translation models, can process several thousand words per second on modern hardware. This means that for a typical document of a few hundred words, the translation can be completed within a few seconds. However, it’s important to note that this is just the translation time and does not include any pre-processing steps, such as tokenization or language detection, which may add additional time.

It’s also worth mentioning that the quality of machine translation can vary depending on the language pair and the specific translation system being used. While machine translation has made significant advancements in recent years, it may still produce errors or inaccuracies in certain contexts, and human post-editing or review may be required to ensure the quality of the translation.
