Ask ChatGPT – July 11, 2023

Ask ChatGPT
My Conversations with ChatGPT
Machine Translation (MT) and translations generated by AI have brought about a paradigm shift in the translation industry. The output of MT will continue to improve, especially when associated with clients’ translation memories and human editing. Language Service Providers are adapting and are including MT in their processes, when MT is applicable. While linguists will continue to be essential in the process, their role will shift from that of translators to validators of content generated by MT. At Excel Translations, we wanted to know what AI thinks about all of this and decided to have an open conversation on the matter with ChatGPT. I will regularly publish a question and ChatGPT’s response, uncensored.

QUESTION 25:

Is machine translation appropriate for packaging labels?

Chat GPT’s Response:

Machine translation can be a useful tool for translating packaging labels, but it is important to approach it with caution and consider several factors.

Advantages of Machine Translation for Packaging Labels:

  • Speed and Efficiency: Machine translation can rapidly translate large volumes of text, allowing for quick localization of packaging labels for different markets.
  • Cost-Effective: Machine translation can be a cost-effective solution, especially for companies with limited translation budgets.
  • Consistency: Machine translation ensures consistent terminology and phrasing across multiple labels and languages.
  • Accessibility: It can make products more accessible to non-native speakers, providing information in their preferred language.

However, there are limitations and potential risks to consider:

  • Accuracy and Quality: Machine translation is not always as accurate or nuanced as human translation. It may struggle with idiomatic expressions, cultural references, or industry-specific terminology, potentially leading to errors or confusion.
  • Legal and Regulatory Compliance: Packaging labels often require adherence to specific regulations and legal requirements. Machine translation may not fully capture the nuances or legal implications, risking non-compliance.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Packaging labels should consider cultural sensitivities and adapt language accordingly. Machine translation might not be sensitive to such nuances, leading to misinterpretation or offense.
  • Brand Image: Packaging labels contribute to a company’s brand image. Relying solely on machine translation may result in a less polished or professional appearance, affecting the overall brand perception.
  • Post-Editing Effort: To ensure accuracy and quality, machine-translated labels often require post-editing by human translators, which adds time and cost.

For critical information, such as product safety warnings or regulatory compliance, it is advisable to employ professional human translators or language experts who can ensure accuracy and address the specific requirements of packaging labels. Machine translation can still be used as a starting point or to assist the translation process, but human review is crucial.
