Ask ChatGPT – July 17, 2023

Ask ChatGPT

My Conversations with ChatGPT
Machine Translation (MT) and translations generated by AI have brought about a paradigm shift in the translation industry. The output of MT will continue to improve, especially when associated with clients’ translation memories and human editing. Language Service Providers are adapting and are including MT in their processes, when MT is applicable. While linguists will continue to be essential in the process, their role will shift from that of translators to validators of content generated by MT. At Excel Translations, we wanted to know what AI thinks about all of this and decided to have an open conversation on the matter with ChatGPT. I will regularly publish a question and ChatGPT’s response, uncensored.

QUESTION 28:

Will machine translation capture text within embedded images that are placed in a given document?

Chat GPT’s Response:

As of my last update in September 2021, machine translation technologies primarily focus on processing and translating textual content. These technologies rely on natural language processing and machine learning techniques to understand and convert text from one language to another.

Machine translation systems are not designed to directly process or translate text within embedded images or visual elements in a given document. When it comes to images, machine translation algorithms won’t recognize the text present in the image directly. Instead, they will only be able to translate any textual content that is extracted from the document itself (e.g., plain text in the document or text in an associated metadata). For images, Optical Character Recognition (OCR) systems can be used to extract text from images, but this text extraction is typically a separate process from machine translation.

To translate text within images, one approach is to use OCR to extract the text, translate the extracted text using machine translation, and then integrate the translated text back into the image. This is a more complex task and might require custom implementations or specialized tools.

It’s worth noting that AI technologies are continually evolving, and there may have been advancements or new approaches since my last update. Still, as of 2021, machine translation systems primarily focus on textual content and do not directly translate text within images.
