My Conversations with ChatGPT
Machine Translation (MT) and translations generated by AI have brought about a paradigm shift in the translation industry. The output of MT will continue to improve, especially when associated with clients’ translation memories and human editing. Language Service Providers are adapting and are including MT in their processes, when MT is applicable. While linguists will continue to be essential in the process, their role will shift from that of translators to validators of content generated by MT. At Excel Translations, we wanted to know what AI thinks about all of this and decided to have an open conversation on the matter with ChatGPT. I will regularly publish a question and ChatGPT’s response, uncensored.
QUESTION 33:
Will machine translation display output correctly from languages that read from right to left?
Chat GPT’s Response:
Yes, modern machine translation systems are generally capable of handling languages that read from right to left (RTL) as well as those that read from left to right (LTR). Machine translation systems, such as those based on neural networks like GPT-3, are designed to be language-agnostic and can handle a wide variety of languages and writing systems.
For RTL languages like Arabic, Hebrew, and Persian, machine translation models should be able to process the input text correctly and generate the output in the appropriate RTL format. These models take into account the directionality of the language when generating the translation.
It’s worth noting that while machine translation models are generally proficient in handling different languages, the quality of the translation output may vary depending on the specific language pair being translated and the data the model was trained on. Highly supported and well-represented language pairs typically yield better results compared to less common or low-resource pairs. Additionally, there may be certain challenges with translation if the input contains mixed directionality or other complex linguistic elements. However, machine translation systems are continuously improving with advances in AI research and the availability of more diverse training data.
