Ask ChatGPT

My Conversations with ChatGPT
Machine Translation (MT) and translations generated by AI have brought about a paradigm shift in the translation industry. The output of MT will continue to improve, especially when associated with clients’ translation memories and human editing. Language Service Providers are adapting and are including MT in their processes, when MT is applicable. While linguists will continue to be essential in the process, their role will shift from that of translators to validators of content generated by MT. At Excel Translations, we wanted to know what AI thinks about all of this and decided to have an open conversation on the matter with ChatGPT. I will regularly publish a question and ChatGPT’s response, uncensored.

QUESTION 100:

Is machine translation changing the way LSP’s handle deliveries to clients?

Chat GPT’s Response:

Yes, machine translation (MT) has significantly impacted the way Language Service Providers (LSPs) handle deliveries to clients. Here are some ways in which machine translation is changing the landscape of translation services:

Efficiency and Speed:

Machine translation can expedite the translation process, allowing LSPs to handle large volumes of content quickly. This can be particularly useful for meeting tight deadlines and delivering content faster to clients.

Post-Editing Services:

LSPs often provide post-editing services where human translators review and refine machine-translated content to ensure accuracy, style, and cultural nuances. This combination of machine translation and human editing can improve efficiency without sacrificing quality.

Cost Savings:

Machine translation can be a cost-effective solution for certain types of content, enabling LSPs to offer more competitive pricing to clients. However, quality assurance remains crucial to avoid potential errors introduced by automated translation.

Customization and Integration:

LSPs may integrate machine translation technologies into their workflow, customizing engines for specific industries or domains. This allows for more accurate and contextually appropriate translations tailored to the client’s needs.

CAT Tools Integration:

Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools often integrate with machine translation engines, providing translators with a hybrid approach. Translators can use the suggestions from the machine translation as a starting point, enhancing efficiency while maintaining quality.

Content Pre-processing:

LSPs may use machine translation for initial content pre-processing, especially for large projects. This can help identify key terminology, extract content for further review, and prioritize translation efforts.

Language Pair Expansion:

Machine translation can enable LSPs to offer services in a broader range of language pairs, even for languages that may have limited resources in terms of human translators. This can be particularly beneficial for languages with less demand.

While machine translation has introduced efficiency gains, it’s important to note that the human touch remains crucial, especially for content that requires a high degree of accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and nuanced understanding. Many LSPs have adopted a balanced approach, combining the strengths of both machine and human translation to deliver high-quality results to their clients.
