When you need corporate translations, accuracy checks are important. One of the ways this is accomplished is through the in-country review.
What is it?
The in-country review, sometimes referred to as a client review or third-party review, is a step in the translation process where the translated files are returned to the client for a review of the translated text.
A native speaker, often times living in the region or country where the translations will be used, reviews the translation to be certain that the terminology used is appropriate for that region and that industry. Certain terms may be more common or accurate than others, and the in-country reviewer can verify the translation, while suggesting terms that they think will better describe their product or service.
When is it done?
The review takes place after the project has been translated and edited, but prior to any required formatting and final proofing.
Standard Translation Process
- Scope Project and Analyze Files
- Translation
- Editing
- In-Country Review
- Translation Memory Update
- Formatting (Desktop Publishing-DTP)
- Quality Assurance (QA)
- Delivery
It is important to note that it is far less time consuming and therefore more cost efficient for the client to complete their in-country review before the formatting stage, rather than after.
Why is it a good practice?
An in-country review is the client’s chance to include someone in their organization who will be using the translated documents in the course of their work or whose customers will be directly using the translated materials.
Oftentimes there may be preferences for terminology or style, depending on the industry, products or services, and company culture. By involving a stakeholder in the process, it is more likely they will properly utilize and effectively support the final and approved translations.
Who in my organization should perform the client-review?
An in-country company employee, representative, affiliate, subsidiary or distributor. Anyone native to the target language and familiar with the product or service should perform the review.
What happens if I don’t have someone available to perform a client review?
There are two options:
- You by-pass this review.
- Excel Translations provides an independent third-party reviewer to perform the review on your behalf (charges apply). Contact us for more information.
How is it done?
In-country review is simple. We provide a table format, which lists the original source text alongside the translated text. And we will provide easy instructions on how to proceed.
How long does it take?
In-country review is easy to perform and can be done quickly, depending on the volume of materials being translated and the availability of your reviewer. However, it is useful to set reasonable deadlines for the reviewers, so the translation review can be completed without causing undue delay to the rest of the translation process.
How much does it cost?
Where the client provides the reviewer(s), there is no additional cost for the in-country review step. As an additional step to business translations services or other service categories, charges would apply if the client would like Excel Translations to provide an independent, third-party reviewer.
Who manages the in-country review process?
Excel Translations’ project managers or the client can manage the process of the in-country review.
