My Conversations with ChatGPT
Machine Translation (MT) and translations generated by AI have brought about a paradigm shift in the translation industry. The output of MT will continue to improve, especially when associated with clients’ translation memories and human editing. Language Service Providers are adapting and are including MT in their processes, when MT is applicable. While linguists will continue to be essential in the process, their role will shift from that of translators to validators of content generated by MT. At Excel Translations, we wanted to know what AI thinks about all of this and decided to have an open conversation on the matter with ChatGPT. I will regularly publish a question and ChatGPT’s response, uncensored.

QUESTION 92:

Does it make sense for LSP’s to hire linguists as contractors or in-house staff in 2023-2024?

Chat GPT’s Response:

The decision for language service providers (LSPs) to hire linguists as contractors or in-house staff in 2023-2024 will depend on various factors, and both options have their merits. Here are some considerations:

Hiring Linguists as Contractors:

  1. Flexibility: Contractors provide flexibility for LSPs, allowing them to scale up or down based on project needs without the long-term commitment of hiring permanent staff.
  2. Cost Control: Contracting can be cost-effective, as it often involves paying for specific projects or services rather than ongoing salaries and benefits.
  3. Access to Specialized Skills: Contractors may bring specific skills or expertise for particular projects, allowing LSPs to access a diverse pool of talent.
  4. Reduced Administrative Burden: Managing contractors typically involves less administrative work than hiring and managing in-house staff.

Hiring Linguists as In-House Staff:

  1. Quality Control: In-house linguists may have a better understanding of the company’s standards and goals, leading to improved quality control.
  2. Company Culture: In-house staff is more likely to align with the company’s culture, fostering a cohesive working environment.
  3. Long-Term Commitment: In-house staff may be more committed to the long-term success of the company, contributing to stability and consistency.
  4. Direct Communication: Having linguists in-house facilitates direct communication, making it easier to manage projects, address issues promptly, and maintain close collaboration.

Ultimately, the choice between hiring linguists as contractors or in-house staff in 2023-2024 will depend on the specific needs, goals, and circumstances of the LSP.
