Ask ChatGPT

My Conversations with ChatGPT
Machine Translation (MT) and translations generated by AI have brought about a paradigm shift in the translation industry. The output of MT will continue to improve, especially when associated with clients’ translation memories and human editing. Language Service Providers are adapting and are including MT in their processes, when MT is applicable. While linguists will continue to be essential in the process, their role will shift from that of translators to validators of content generated by MT. At Excel Translations, we wanted to know what AI thinks about all of this and decided to have an open conversation on the matter with ChatGPT. I will regularly publish a question and ChatGPT’s response, uncensored.

QUESTION 112:

What language pair tends to be the most costly for outsourcing translation?

Chat GPT’s Response:

The cost of outsourcing translation services can vary based on multiple factors, including the language pair involved. Generally, language pairs that involve relatively uncommon or specialized languages tend to be more costly. Here are a few factors that contribute to a language pair being more expensive for translation outsourcing:

Language Rarity:

If the source or target language is rare or less commonly spoken, finding qualified translators with expertise in that language can be more challenging. This scarcity can drive up the cost.

Technical Complexity:

Translating highly technical or specialized content requires translators with domain-specific knowledge. If a language pair involves technical terminology or specialized jargon, it may require more experienced and skilled translators, impacting the cost.

Subject Matter Complexity:

Some industries have highly specialized vocabulary and require translators with expertise in those domains. For example, legal, medical, or scientific translations may command higher rates due to the complexity of the subject matter.

Language Direction:

The demand for translation services between certain language pairs can influence pricing. For instance, if there is high demand for translations from a less common language into a widely spoken language, the cost may be higher.

Geopolitical Factors:

Political and economic factors in certain regions can impact the availability of qualified translators and influence pricing. For instance, geopolitical tensions or economic instability may affect the cost of outsourcing translation services for specific language pairs.

Market Demand:

Languages that are in high demand for translation services but have limited availability of qualified translators may command higher rates. This demand-supply imbalance can affect pricing.

Quality Requirements:

Some projects may require a higher level of quality assurance, additional rounds of review, or specialized services. These factors can contribute to increased costs for specific language pairs.

While these factors can influence the cost of translation services, it’s essential to consider the overall quality of the translation and the specific requirements of the project. Additionally, market conditions, economic changes, and advancements in language technology can impact pricing over time.
