Ask ChatGPT

My Conversations with ChatGPT
Machine Translation (MT) and translations generated by AI have brought about a paradigm shift in the translation industry. The output of MT will continue to improve, especially when associated with clients’ translation memories and human editing. Language Service Providers are adapting and are including MT in their processes, when MT is applicable. While linguists will continue to be essential in the process, their role will shift from that of translators to validators of content generated by MT. At Excel Translations, we wanted to know what AI thinks about all of this and decided to have an open conversation on the matter with ChatGPT. I will regularly publish a question and ChatGPT’s response, uncensored.

QUESTION 26:

Will machine translation automatically translate proper names?

Chat GPT’s Response:

Machine translation systems typically struggle with translating proper names accurately and consistently. This is because proper names are often unique to specific individuals, places, or entities and may not have direct translations in other languages. Machine translation algorithms primarily rely on statistical patterns and linguistic rules to generate translations, and since proper names often deviate from these patterns, they can be challenging to handle correctly.

However, some machine translation systems have made improvements in handling proper names by incorporating named entity recognition (NER) techniques. NER algorithms can identify and classify proper names in a given text, helping machine translation systems handle them more effectively. These systems may utilize techniques such as transliteration, where the proper name is phonetically converted into the target language, or provide a phonetic approximation of the original name.

Nonetheless, the accuracy of translating proper names still varies depending on the language pair, the specific machine translation system used, and the quality of the training data. In some cases, the translation may be reasonably accurate, especially for well-known names or widely used terms. However, for less common or culturally specific names, machine translation systems may struggle to provide accurate translations and may even produce nonsensical or incorrect results.

Therefore, when it comes to translating proper names, it is generally advisable to handle them with caution, review the results critically, and consider the context and cultural nuances involved. Human intervention or post-editing is often necessary to ensure accurate and meaningful translations of proper names.
