Ask ChatGPT

My Conversations with ChatGPT
Machine Translation (MT) and translations generated by AI have brought about a paradigm shift in the translation industry. The output of MT will continue to improve, especially when associated with clients’ translation memories and human editing. Language Service Providers are adapting and are including MT in their processes, when MT is applicable. While linguists will continue to be essential in the process, their role will shift from that of translators to validators of content generated by MT. At Excel Translations, we wanted to know what AI thinks about all of this and decided to have an open conversation on the matter with ChatGPT. I will regularly publish a question and ChatGPT’s response, uncensored.

QUESTION 16:

Can machine translation capture any language dialect?

ChatGPT’s Response:

Machine translation systems can be trained to handle different language dialects, but the effectiveness may vary depending on the specific dialect and the resources available for training. Machine translation systems typically rely on large amounts of parallel data, which consists of translated sentences in the source and target languages. If there is a significant amount of parallel data available for a specific dialect, it is possible to train a machine translation system to handle that dialect.

However, there are a few challenges when it comes to capturing language dialects in machine translation:

  • Data Availability: Machine translation systems require substantial amounts of parallel data for training. If there is limited or no parallel data available for a specific dialect, it becomes challenging to build an accurate machine translation system for that dialect.
  • Vocabulary and Syntax Differences: Dialects often have variations in vocabulary, grammar, and syntax compared to the standard language. If these differences are significant, it can be difficult for a machine translation system trained on the standard language to accurately handle the nuances of the dialect.
  • Regional Variations: Dialects can have regional variations, meaning that even within a dialect, there can be sub-dialects or variations specific to certain regions. Training a machine translation system to handle all possible regional variations can be a complex task.

While machine translation systems can be adapted to handle specific dialects, it is important to note that the quality and accuracy of translation may vary depending on the availability of data and the level of linguistic divergence between the dialect and the standard language.
